The Scone & Upper Hunter Horse Festival is in full swing. It commenced on the 28 April and will run til the 15 May 2011. Scone is 27 km up the New England Highway from Muswellbrook in NSW, Australia.
Scone a rural community where for many people the horse plays a major role in their daily lives, wether it be stock work, horse breeding, or horse competition. For others, simply having a horse and riding for pleasure is one of the joys of country life.
Scone is the Horse Capital of Australia and this festival celebrates the place where horses reign and where each year many people from within the region and from far afield come to share the pride in our area and our equine industry.
The Festival has evolved from a simple street parade into a 17-day program of events for everyone. There is “King of the Ranges" stockmans competition in Murrurundi, polo, rodeo, interschools sports day, a Calcutta, Thoroughbred Horse Stud Tours and a two day horse racing carnival. The Scone Cup Race Meeting is sponsored by the world famous Emirates Park Horse Stud and will be held at from 11am on Friday 16th May.
The film “A little Bit Mongolian” will be shown in a special screening. It features Angus Paradice, the first foreign boy to compete in the Naadam Festival Mongolia horse races.
The big Horse Festival Parade takes place through the main street of Scone at 11am on Saturday 7th May 2011. It features many horses, schools, drama groups, local businesses, the Light Horse Brigade, musical bands, decorated floats and much more.
There are also art and craft displays, an antiques show, a fete, a buskers competition, a fun run, Horsemanship and Campdrafting Clinics, Linedancing Socials and a picnic by the lake to name a few of the attractions on offer.
