Many man made structures are known world wide. China has the Great Wall, France has the Eiffel
Tower, England
has Big Ben, and the USA
has the Statue of Liberty. In Australia
the building known world wide is the Sydney Opera House. This performing
arts venue actually has six unique venues under its sail like roofs. .
The Opera House with its distinctive roof of ‘sails’,
patterned tiles, vast terraced areas set against the stunning backdrop of Sydney
Harbour. The Sydney Opera House was opened by Queen Elizabeth II in 1973 and
since then has been visited by locals and tourists from all over the world. The
Sydney Opera House hosts over 2,500 performances and events each year.
To celebrate Australian Heritage week the Sydney opera House is opening its doors to
the public for free tours. People will be able to see inside one of the world's
iconic buildings to experience the magic behind the world's most extraordinary
opera, ballet, symphony and dramatic performances and discover why Jorn Utzon
was more than an architect: he was an architect of change, who triumphed over
political and creative challenges to create a masterpiece.
In the words of the World Heritage committee, "Sydney
Opera House stands by itself as one of the indisputable masterpieces of human
creativity, not only in the 20th century but in the history of humankind."
Parts of the Opera House that are normally off limits for visitor
will be open to the public on the free open day. People can admire the grandeur
of the Concert Hall, wander through the labyrinth of backstage corridors, relax
in the 'green' room where the stars hang out, see the performing spaces and look
inside the dressing rooms used by the world famous stars that have performed
here
Bookings are required for the free tours, which take about
an hour. Bookings can be made on line for departure times on Sunday 16 April
