Preparations for the 29th Harbin Ice and Snow Festival near completion for the January 5, 2013 opening.

The festival, which will take place at the Harbin Ice and Snow World theme park, will include international ice and snow sculpture competitions, stage performances, music shows, and as many as 100 other activities.

The Ice and Snow World covers an area of over 8 million square feet, with more than 2,000 ice artworks on display during the festival.

The theme park was open for a trial operation last Sunday.

The festival is one of the world's four largest international ice festivals, along with Japan's Sapporo Snow Festival, Canada's Quebec Winter Carnival, and Norway's Ski Festival. It will run for over a month.

Now thousands of visitors have been attracted to Harbin as heavy snow has turned the city into a brilliant white world. They are having fun on ice sleds and slides and making snowmen.
