This year’s show will feature leading landscape design ideas and floral arrangements from Australia and abroad.
“The Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show is one of the world’s largest and most prestigious horticulture events,” Premier Denis Napthine who inaugurated the flower show said.
“Our show is ranked as one of the top five flower and garden shows anywhere in the world and is the largest show of its type in the southern hemisphere.
“It is an integral part of Victoria’s cultural major events calendar and has attracted more than 1.8 million local and international visitors since its inaugural event in 1995.
“The International Flower and Garden Show is a fantastic to way to showcase Victoria and promote our status as Australia’s garden and flower state,” Dr Napthine said.
A number of special interest attractions will be on display such as the Lindeman’s Open Garden, the Sculpture Garden, Landscape Show Gardens, the Children’s Garden and the Student Landscape Design Competition.
This year’s theme for the Student Landscape Design Award was Landscaping for Bushfire – the Suburban Garden.
“This design has important practical applications in Victoria that will prevent and reduce the impact that bushfires can have on our homes and landscapes,” Dr Napthine said.
“I would like to congratulate Meg Geary from NMIT for her winning submission and innovative response for landscaping for bushfire.
“I would also like to congratulate Daniel Tyrrell Landscapes on winning the Honda Sustainability Award for their garden that utilised best practice planting style and equipment in their design while incorporating sustainable gardening practices and principles,” Dr Napthine said.
The 2013 Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show will be held from 20- 24 March 2013 in the Royal Exhibition Building and surrounding Carlton Gardens.
