Prince Harry will visit Sydney to take part in the International Fleet Review celebrations next month.

“The International Fleet Review will be one of the biggest events ever staged in Sydney – I’m delighted that Prince Harry will now be part of the celebrations,” NSW Premier Barry O’Farrell said.

“Every royal visit attracts enormous excitement and I’m sure Sydneysiders will embrace Prince Harry during his short stay.

“The International Fleet Review is being held to commemorate the centenary of the first entry of the Royal Australian Navy's Fleet into Sydney Harbour and about 40 warships from around the world are expected to take part.

“Prince Harry has forged a distinguished military career in his own right so it’s fitting he’ll officiate in centenary celebrations for the Royal Australian Navy.

“Prince Harry’s visit for the International Fleet Review will attract worldwide attention and it will be a great opportunity to again showcase Sydney as Australia’s premier city,” he said.

As a guest of the Commonwealth of Australia, Prince Harry will accompany the Governor General of Australia, Her Excellency Quentin Bryce, while she performs the role of Reviewing Officer of the IFR Ceremonial Fleet Review, which will be held in Sydney Harbour on Saturday 5 October.

During the review, the Reviewing Officer will receive a salute from each warship from her position onboard the Hydrographic Survey ship HMAS Leeuwin. The warships will also ‘man and cheer ship’, as a mark of respect for the Reviewing Officer and her guest of honour.

Director International Fleet Review, Captain Nick Bramwell said hosting Prince Harry would be a great honour for the Royal Australian Navy.

“The Australian public has a fond regard for members of the Royal Family and His Royal Highness is sure to draw big crowds to Sydney Harbour for the biggest public event ever hosted by the Royal Australian Navy.

“Prince Harry is a Defence Force member who has recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan and our people regard him with absolute respect. It will be a great privilege to welcome him to the International Fleet Review,” said Captain Bramwell.

Details of the program, and locations where the public will be able to see the Prince, will be made publicly available closer to the visit.
