W Hotels Celebrates Rock the Empire – the International Premiere of W Beijing, Chang'an

W Hotels Worldwide, part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE: HOT), celebrated the opening of its newest property in Asia, W Beijing, Chang'an, with an exhilarating international Premiere event. Local and international trendsetters alike reveled at eclectic performances from around the world, including the Queen of Burlesque Dita Von Teese while soaking in the uniquely sophisticated setting.

“As an industry innovator and global influencer, W Hotels serves as the nucleus of creative energy in vibrant cities around the world,” said Sarah Doyle, Global Brand Director, W Hotels Worldwide. “We are thrilled to showcase W Beijing, Chang'an through the brand's Premiere tradition, bringing to life the brand's passion points through pulsating music, edgy performances and bold fashion. The performances reflected an explosive east-meets-west synergy alongside the coexistence of punk and royalty in fashion, music and design to create an atmosphere that is entirely unique to Beijing.”

Nestled in Beijing's bustling downtown diplomatic and commercial district, near Tiananmen Square, the Forbidden City, and the eclectic Silk Market, W Beijing Chang'an exudes a distinctive metropolitan vibe. With 349 stylish and spacious guestrooms and suites, four distinctive bars and restaurants providing world class entertainment and dining experiences, a well-equipped fitness center, Away Spa, and nearly 1,500 square meters of versatile space for high-energy meetings or spectacular events, the hotel offers a lifestyle experience focused on cutting edge design, fashion and music. It also offers Insider Access, wholly embracing the imposing grandeur of Beijing's past.

High Style, with a Spark

The highly anticipated night kicked off with an envelope-pushing fashion show by Vega Zaishi Wang, one of China's most prolific new age fashion designers. A graduate of London College of Fashion and Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design, Vega ignited the Premiere with a specially curated fashion show comprised of the most iconic pieces from her collections. Largely defined by a signature silhouette, the use of unconventional materials and blasts of charismatic British culture and Chinese influences, the show marked Vega's first collaboration with Helen Feng, the prominent vocalist from Beijing's hottest psych-rock band, Nova Heart. The catwalk pulsed with Helen's maniacal vocals, accompanied with electric kicks, hits and throttling bass as a fashion drama unfolded, simultaneously revealing the stark contrast between the glamorous limelight and laborious backstage activities.

Scene Fit for a Queen

The Premiere night of W Beijing, Chang'an continued to soar, reaching new heights of sophistication with the commanding presence of Dita Von Teese, dubbed 'The Burlesque Super Heroine' by Vanity Fair. The sultry cabaret act, personally curated by Dita herself, marked the final performance of the W Beijing: Rock the Empire global tour, a traveling installation featuring an oversized gilded birdcage, symbolic of China's multi-century love affair with bird keeping- an art form that has been passed down from the royal and noble to the everyday citizen. Created with New York-based interior design firm Nema Workshop, the centerpiece is a golden 3.5 meter-tall birdcage that exudes the essence of W Beijing, artfully juxtaposing a Ming vase-shaped interior with glossy Chinese landscape patterns. In modern twist, guests and locals are invited to step inside the cage and strike a pose, uploading their images to their social networks using the hashtag #RockTheEmpire.

W Beijing: Rock the Empire tour drew formidable crowds when it made its debut in New York and London on Chinese New Year (February 19, 2015). It then continued on to San Francisco, Hong Kong and Singapore. In the final show at W Beijing, Chang'an, the ever-elegant Dita von Teese donned an elaborate gold costume while performing in the glimmering birdcage installation, accompanied by a team of costumed beauties. The dazzling and provocative number evoked the heyday of Hollywood's golden age with a spellbinding Beijing twist – an apt closing act for the birdcage's global tour.

“I am thrilled to be here at W Beijing, the hotel that sparked this innovative series of performances,” said Dita von Teese. “Tonight's glamorous event was the perfect grand finale in this series of performances for W Hotels.”

Revolution of Sound

To sustain the evening's electrifying atmosphere, American duo The Dolls, comprised of DJ Mia Moretti and Margot, took to the stage following Dita's performance, treating the audience to their unusual combination of live classical violin and DJ remixes. Named one of the hottest new artists to watch by Interview Magazine, The Dolls have spent the last three years performing around the world, including on the runways of New York Fashion Week and as the opening act for Janet Jackson's performance at the Louvre in France.

The excitement continued well into the night as guests were then ushered into the hotel's exclusive club lounge X25Guests were treated to a special edition of Kitsune Club Night after party with Kitsune's co-creator and artistic director DJ Gildas Loaec and indietronica rock band Is Tropical. Founded in 2002, Kitsune is an innovative concept that has taken the fashion and music industry by storm with its Kitsuné music label, Maison Kitsuné clothing brand and Café Kitsuné coffee spots. Since 2012, Kitsune has also found its ground, running club tours around the world from New York, Tokyo, Paris, London, Singapore and Shanghai.

At X25, the intrepid Gildas, born and bred in France, heated up the dance floor with his signature suave spontaneity and addictive beats. Guests then witnessed the catchy disco slickness and moody rock of Is Tropical, a London-based trio that plays festival gigs and trendy clubs over the world. Performing under the Kitsuné umbrella, the band transformed X25 into a fun, soulful party of style and substance.

Greg Findlay, General Manager at W Beijing - Chang'an said, “The global acts that performed at W Beijing – Chang'an in honor of our Premiere spotlighted the hotel's sophisticated, punk-meets-royalty glam. Through riveting performances, including the alluring artistry of Dita Von Teese, we have shown our guests and locals a glimpse of the hotel's eclectic flavors, and the future events we have in store.”
