ENTRIES OPEN FOR NEWCREST ORANGE RIDE

Fitness and wine are set to combine for a cycling event in Central West NSW.

Entries are now open for next year’s Newcrest Orange Challenge and after a hugely successful inaugural year in 2016, organisers are promising an even better showcase, with an extra ride distance and a bigger food and wine festival at the finish line.

NSW Minister for Trade, Tourism and Major Events Stuart Ayres said the event has been secured for three years until 2018 through the NSW Government’s tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.

“The Newcrest Orange Challenge is expected to attract more than 3,000 domestic and international visitors to the area, with an estimated visitor spend of more than $1.5 million across the three-year period, which is great news for the region’s tourism industry,” Mr Ayres said.

The fully-supported 170 kilometre route, which includes 2,200 vertical metres of climbing, will challenge seasoned cyclists; the addition of a 70 kilometre option that heads from Orange through to Canowindra gives riders another great way to experience the region’s rugged roads and rolling hills.

Bicycle Network General Manager of Events Rebecca Lane said that while the routes were challenging, the scenery and European-style velodrome finish make the rides an unforgettable experience.

“The Newcrest Orange Challenge is a testing day out on the bike but we promise you'll be left with just enough energy in your legs to celebrate with a victory lap of the velodrome and a sample of the local fare at the food and wine festival,” Ms Lane said.

“With routes that wind their way through the peaks of Canowindra and Mandurama and beautiful produce on show at the food and wine festival and local restaurants, there’s no better way to get a taste of Orange on two wheels.”

The Newcrest Orange Challenge will take place on Sunday, 5 March 2017 and is also offering a range of packages for corporate teams, providing a perfect opportunity for employees to experience a weekend in Regional NSW with friends and family.
