17 San Diego Events Not to Be Missed in 2017

In a city that combines laid-back beach vibes with an urban, metropolitan downtown and dozens of quirky neighborhoods, visitors can find events year-round that are as diverse as San Diego itself. Below are 17 uniquely San Diegan special events that visitors can experience in 2017.

Jan. 26-29

Farmers Insurance Open

The annual PGA Tour men's tournament sees golf's biggest stars on the green at the world-famous Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, home of the 2021 U.S. Open. Golfers hoping to play the greens at the world-famous course can enjoy a $12.6 million renovation of the north course, completed in 2016.

San Diego Museum Month

Throughout February, many the region's rich cultural offerings can be experienced at half-price. San Diego Visitors can pick up a free San Diego Museum Month Pass at participating Macy's locations; with the pass, they can receive half-price admission for up to four guests per visit at more than 40 of San Diego's museums, ranging from exquisite art museums to historical sites and interactive science centers.

San Diego Latino Film Festival

San Diego's proximity to Mexico makes it a natural venue for this prestigious film festival, focusing on acclaimed movies by Latinos or about the Latino experience. Held at the AMC 18 Theaters in Fashion Valley and the Digital Gym Cinema in North Park, the festival includes parties, workshops, art exhibitions and the opportunity to mingle with international movie and television stars.

CRSSD Festival

Held at downtown San Diego's Waterfront Park along the Embarcadero, the CRSSD music festival features top names in electronic music. Past performers have included Miike Snow, Maya Jane Coles, Aluna George and more. Craft beer, gourmet food, impeccable daytime vibes and an unparalleled bayside setting make CRSSD a uniquely San Diego music festival.

Fallbrook Avocado Festival

Since the 1960s, tens of thousands of avocado lovers converge in Fallbrook, California's avocado hub located in San Diego's North County, to sample avocados, check-out the crazy cooking contest entries, buy funky avocado-themed gifts and enjoy bands, live entertainment and friendly beer gardens.

Chicano Park Day

In the early 1970s, the Latino community established Chicano Park, the world's largest collection of Chicano murals, beneath the San Diego-Coronado Bridge overpass. This free annual event celebrates the art and culture of San Diego's Latino residents with traditional music, dance, a lowrider car show, vendor booths, kids' arts workshops and more.

San Diego LGBT Pride Parade, Rally and Festival

One of the city's largest grassroots organizations, San Diego LGBT Pride sponsors a weekend of festivities including a headlining parade through Hillcrest, the center of the city's LGBT community, and two-day music festival in Balboa Park.

Comic-Con International

The largest comics and pop culture event in the United States attracts thousands of artists, celebrities and fans of comic books, movie memorabilia and all things related to pop culture to the San Diego Convention Center in downtown San Diego.

Unleashed by Petco Surf Dog Competition

San Diego loves both surfing and dogs, so why not combine the two? Dozens of dogs take to the waves near Imperial Beach pier to compete in small dog, large dog and tandem surfing heats.

Tiki Oasis

Thousands of tiki fans convene at the largest and longest-running tiki gathering in the world. Each year, attendees enjoy a tiki-tastic art and fashion marketplace, live tropical-jazz music, go-go dancers, a classic car show, pool parties and more

Sept. 15-17

KAABOO Del Mar

An upscale music festival experience held at the seaside Del Mar Fairgrounds, KAABOO features seven stages and more than 100 musical acts, plus a dedicated comedy stage and food and beverages from local and celebrity chefs, craft breweries and local wineries.

Sept. 30

Cabrillo Festival

Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo was the first European explorer to discover the West Coast in 1542, and San Diego commemorates the historic event with an annual celebration and reenactment of his landing on the shores of San Diego Bay beneath the Cabrillo National Monument on Point Loma.

Oct. 19-22

Extreme Sailing Series

Professional sailors will take to San Diego Bay aboard a fleet of hydro-foiling GC32 catamarans, capable of reaching speeds of up to 39 knots. San Diego serves as the penultimate race stop and is the only U.S. destination featured in this international racing series.

Galleries from the U.S., Canada, Europe, Latin America and Asia showcase paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints, photographs, videos and cutting-edge multimedia artworks during this contemporary art fair, which serves as a marketplace for the world's leading contemporary art galleries.

Breeders' Cup World Championships

One of thoroughbred racing's most prestigious international events, 2017 marks the first year this renowned race will be held at the seaside Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. The best horses, trainers and owners from around the world will gather in Del Mar for the two-day, $26 million competition.

Nov. 3-12

San Diego Beer Week

With more than 120 breweries in the county, San Diego's Beer Week trumps all others. Hundreds of beer-centric events take place throughout the region during this 10-day festival that highlights San Diego's award-winning craft beer, breweries and pubs.

Dec. 1-2

Balboa Park December Nights

This celebration of the holiday season is the largest free community festival in San Diego and features foods and crafts from around the world, holiday music and events in Balboa Park's diverse museums.
