World Badminton Chief visits Gold Coast ahead of prestigious Sudirman Cup event being staged in May

World Badminton Federation Secretary General Thomas Lund and Badminton Australia officials will this Thursday (January 19) conduct their first walk-through of the Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre where the prestigious Total BWF Sudirman Cup 2017 – the world team championship of badminton – will be staged this year.

It is the first time that Lund, who is Malaysian based, has been to Australia to walk through the nearly complete venue- and marks the New Year countdown to the event in May 2017.

Danish born Lund is an ex-world champion badminton player and Olympic Games medallist, and the face of all major badminton announcements and news globally.

With tickets already on-sale for the Total BWF Sudirman Cup 2017 event on the Gold Coast, Thomas Lund is in Australia to meet with the Sudirman Cup organising committee and to have a special tour of the state-of-the-art venue.

The Sudirman Cup 2017 world team championships of badminton tournament will be held at the Gold Coast Sports & Leisure Centre in the new sporting precinct for the 2018 Commonwealth Games, and marks the first time in the 25 year history of the event that the Badminton World Federation (BWF) has selected an Australian destination to stage the Cup.

The Sudirman Cup will be the first major event held at the centre before the Commonwealth Games are staged next year.

The hugely popular event will attract the world’s best players from badminton powerbases including China, Korea, India, Denmark, Thailand, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Indonesia and Malaysia, with the TV broadcast set to be watched by more than 500 million viewers globally, with badminton ranking as the world’s second most popular sport.

The Sudirman Cup, together with the BWF AGM, is expected to bring more than 1,500 participants from over 160 countries who will all converge on the Gold Coast in May.
