Glebe birthday celebrations open to all

Glebe Library
One of Sydney’s most popular libraries will celebrate its 20th birthday with an open day with live music, workshops, dancing and storytelling.

Glebe Library will host a free open day on Saturday 20 May with events and activities taking place throughout the library, adjoining Benledi House and lawn from 11am to 3pm.

“Glebe library’s colourful history dates back to the ‘90s, when the community collaborated to turn the former Sydney Hospital site into a library,” Lord Mayor Clover Moore said.

“It’s one of the City’s most popular libraries.”

Workshop zones for kids will feature Edison robots, 3D Doodlers and ukelele playing to Rhymetime for toddlers, art and craft activities and all-ages ceramic workshops. Aboriginal locals, Aunty Kathy and Aunty Wendy will share Dreamtime stories and live music will be performed by local musicians.

Other activities include a silent disco, face and body painting, guided walks, dance demonstrations and illustrated history talks with local actors Lyn Collingwood, Elaine Hudson and Kim Knuckey.

Glebe library was officially opened on 19 April 1997. It was transferred from Leichhardt Council to Sydney City Council as part of boundary changes which came into effect on 8 May 2003.

In addition to a continually changing collection of books, CDs and DVDs, Glebe library offers locals:
  • free wireless internet
  • public access computers
  • scanning, printing and photocopying facilities
  • a wide collection of newspapers and magazines
  • weekly rock, rhyme and storytimes
  • a toy library
  • dedicated local history collection.

The City has nine libraries that have serviced the community for more than 100 years, and now offer a wide range of accessible services including access to technology, events and literacy programs.
