MTF 2017 SESSION FEATURE: HOTEL INVESTMENT

ASEAN continues to see extraordinary growth in foreign direct investment, with a 5% increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) while global FDI fell 16%. “Developing Asia”, which includes parts of the GMS, did even better, welcoming 9% more FDI.

But is the GMS getting its fair share with regard to tourism related investment? Regardless, what can and should existing players and interested parties in the GMS do to attract greater investor interest? What are the criteria investors use when evaluating hotel and tourism related opportunities and their preferred project types?

Session facilitators Robert Hecker (Managing Director of Singapore-based Horwath HTL) and Charles Blocker (CEO, IC Partners Ltd) have gathered a top-notch team, experienced in regional project development and financing, to engage delegates in identifying the opportunities for, and overcoming the challenges in, driving increased and sustainable investment for GMS tourism growth. The team of experts include Anchalika Kijkanakorn (Managing Director, AKARYN Hotel Group), Rei Matsuda (CEO, Kokotel), Victor Pang (VP – Development, AccorHotels), Stefan Wolf (Chief Commercial Officer, Favstay), and Eric Recaurte (CEO, Greenview).

This session will reveal key trends, opportunities, challenges, and risks that could tamper future hotel investment in the Greater Mekong Subregion.

Hosted at the Luang Prabang View Hotel, a multi-million-dollar project that began in 2007 and took three years to complete is a perfect venue with a striking view over the heritage town, to debate what the investment opportunities are in the hotel sector, and what are the markets with the greatest potential?

Part of the Sustainable Investment Track, and matched with the session on Green and Clean Tourism Cities, hosted at the Grand Hotel Luang Prabang at the banks of the Mekong River, moderated by GIZ and the Asia Foundation to debate how travel operators can adopt and implement programs to ban plastic bags and single-use water bottles and to conserve and recycle water. This track is a must-attend for any serious travel and tourism execute committed to ensure a balanced and sustainable investment climate of the region.
