Vivid LIVE announces full line-ups for Repressed Records 15th Anniversary & The Avalanches Block Party

The Sydney Opera House today announced full line-up details for two of their Vivid LIVE harbourside shows, Repressed Records 15th Anniversary and The Avalanches - Since I Left You Block Party, as part of Vivid Sydney, the world’s largest festival of light, music and ideas.

Newtown’s vinyl mecca, Repressed Records, will stack the Sydney Opera House’s harbourside with Australian artists representing the entire sonic palette, from deep rock to experimental electronic. Joining already announced headline acts Total Control and Severed Heads are Miss Destiny, Lucy Cliche, Kitchen’s Floor, Fake (BV / Cassius Select), Angie, Francis Plagne, Skyline and Horse Macgyver (Live Visuals).

Playing only two shows in Australia upon the release of their second album Typical System, Total Control’s comeback proves Repressed Records to be a vital outpost for an independent creative community that reaches back to Severed Heads' ‘80s electronic innovations. Richard Kingsmill crowned Typical System his #1 album the year it came out and, in Triple J’s own words, “a masterclass in defying convention … Total Control are unlikely – but effortless – leaders.”

Sydney’s beating heart of the DIY music scene, Repressed Records built itself from the ground up in Penrith before joining the cultural rush of Newtown in 2008. More than just a music store, Repressed Records is an integral community hub for the local music scene and has driven artists like Royal Headache, Total Control and Straight Arrows to worldwide fame. Throughout its growth, Repressed has remained staunch to the art of wax, cassettes, high-fidelity luxury and sounds on the fringes of punk and experimental.

Vivid LIVE prides itself on celebrating artists and their communities that comprise a critical part of the local music ecosystem. The line-up of artists on the Repressed Records 15th Anniversary bill represents the independent music culture that the institution has championed in Australia and internationally. The 15th Anniversary of the independent music icon is the perfect time to bring the unique Northern Broadwalk harbourside venue back, having only been used once before for Future Classic’s 10th anniversary performance FCX featuring Flume (Vivid LIVE 2015).

Ben Marshall, Vivid LIVE curator, said: “It’s no secret that music venues and touring festivals are facing new challenges across the country. The Sydney Opera House’s artistic & cultural contribution to contemporary music has never been more important and we’re very proud to champion local artistic communities like Repressed Records, Goodgod, Mad Racket and Future Classic. They’re a critical part of our musical ecosystem and remain uncompromising in their hunger for excellence and ambition.”

Repressed Records' Nic Warnock said: “To celebrate 15 years of Repressed Records we’ve put together a line-up that reflects our vision of what a music community can be in 2017. From roots in youth centre hardcore punk to bedroom electronic experimentation, we think all the acts are linked by the ever-evolving 'do-it-yourself' music tradition that can break through the mainstream mould. Like our previous collaborations with the Opera House, consider this your friendly neighbourhood store guarantee that we’ll knock ya socks off on the waterfront outdoor stage at Vivid LIVE!”

The special stage will also host the Australian-exclusive event, The Avalanches - Since I Left You Block Party, with special guests DJ Shadow, Briggs, Jonti (Sat 27 May) and Sampa the Great (Sun 28 May), as well as just-announced Melbourne veteran DJ JNETT.

JNETT is one of Melbourne’s true diggers from The Avalanches’ early days. Her crates dig deep into the history of house, techno, funk, soul, dub and hip-hop. JNETT’s ears became finely tuned behind the counter at Melbourne’s Central Station Records, and as host of ABC’s legendary dance music show Recovery. Her recent set at Sugar Mountain spanned an entire history of dancefloor anthems, a set to dance through the ages to.
